My daughter has asked me to post my Grandmother's School work, to demonstrate how the schools used to teach their students to practice good penmanship.
Grandma was 13 & 14 years old when she wrote in this book.
I picked some of her writings that were personal.

Cleaning goal accomplished: See pictures below for comparisons!

WHY IT TOOK ME 6 HOURS TO CLEAN MY KITCHEN COUNTER:
1. First I had to empty my dishwasher.
2. Then I loaded my dishwasher.
3. In putting my cleaned knives away, I saw that the knife holder was disgusting, so I took it down and scrubbed it. In scrubbing it, I scrubbed off the varnish, so I set it aside to dry.
4. In taking the knife holder off the wall, I saw the cobwebs around the dirty curtains.
(LET ME JUST SAY, THAT WHEN I TAKE ON A CLEANING PROJECT, I NOTICE EVERYTHING ELSE THAT HAS BEEN NEGLECTED - AND THESE DIRTY AREAS JUST SCREAM AT ME!)
5. I put grandson, Jack, down for a nap.
6. I took down the curtain.
7. I had to rotate the laundry that was sitting in my dryer and washer, so I could wash my curtains.
8. I washed the windows (I AVOIDED TAKING THE DOUBLE LAYER WINDOWS APART AND DOING A GOOD JOB - INSTEAD, I JUST WASHED THE SPATTERED WINDOWS FACING THE SINK).
9. I washed the ceiling above the sink, where something brownish/red had splashed, maybe years ago....who knows. (I AVOIDED TAKING THE LIGHT ABOVE THE SINK APART AND CLEANING IT THOROUGHLY).
10. Calvin and Jude came in from school; I fixed them hot chocolate.
11. I'M NOW JUST STARTING TO CLEAN THE COUNTER.
12. I cleaned the scuzzy scrubber holder - yuck, it was bad.
13. I had to reorganize my herbal tea bag box, so all the herb teas I'd bought and had sitting on the counter could be put away.
14. I had to clean out the power supply holder (my wicker goose), because cords were hanging out from it - I found 4 power supplies we no longer used.
15. I cleaned off my breadboard that holds my counter stuff: salt, pepper, oil and vinager, utensils, tea, etc. That needed to be scrubbed good and everything washed off.
16. I had to refill my salt and pepper shakers.
17. Rotated the laundry again, so I could dry my curtains.
18. I had to sweep my bathroom floor, because I spilled granulated laundry soap.
19. I could now finish putting stuff into the crockpot for my dinner soup.
20. Riley arrived from school, so now it's help the kids get their homework done.
21. Jack wakes up.
22. Time to fix an after school snack.
23. I finish cleaning the counter!!!!
24. I varnished my knife holder.
25. I rehung the curtain. WHEW! I'm done!

I'M HOPING TO CLEAN OFF TWO SURFACES TOMORROW: THE TOP OF A BOOKCASE IN MY FAMILY ROOM AND THE TOP OF MY KITCHEN HUTCH: WISH ME LUCK!

organizing

I've just had a meltdown - I've been laughing hysterically, because I spent the morning looking through books on organizing http://www.houseoforder.com/ at the local book store, only to return home and realize the time would have been better spent just cleaning off my kitchen counter! When I went to plug in my crockpot, I couldn't even reach the electrical outlet, my counter is in such shambles.
MY SEVEN DAY PLAN IS TO CLEAN OFF A SURFACE EVERY DAY! COULD YOU GUESS THAT MY KITCHEN IS TODAY'S GOAL?!?!?!
By the way, my experience with last week's goal was humbling and very rewarding! I was able to reach out to someone every day AND I'M SO GLAD I DID! One woman, who was diagnosed with pre-leukemia, was in the hospital. I went to visit her on friday, and found out it was full-blown leukemia and she was being sent to the University of Utah hospital. I was able to sit with her, talk about the Plan of Salvation, kiss her and tell her how much I loved her. She died yesterday! I'm so glad I had set that goal, or I would have lived with a huge regret!

JUST FOR ONE WEEK: I'm taking icecreamdiary's challenge http://icecreamdiary.blogspot.com/ and setting a weekly goal. I LIKE THIS because I think I can do it!

This week I will reach out to someone each day. Today I went to a ladie's house to help her with her genealogy. She'll never be able to figure it out - it's just too hard for her, but she just needs someone to talk to, and I can work on her genealogy as she gabs to me. Tomorrow I will visit someone who's daughter died last month. Wednesday I am taking a meal to someone who had surgery. Thursday I am going to lunch with someone who went through a stupid and bad divorce. Friday I am going to the Temple. Saturday...I'll have to figure something out. I CAN DO THIS!

I just put another story on my website: http://www.karensarchives.com/17.html
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Everyone you meet knows something you don't know but need to know. Learn from them.

THROWOUT OF THE DAY (To DI): This is a small throwout, but significant. These extra stuffed toys I've collected through the years, and have been jammed into this small basket. Of course, the basket throws up on a continual basis, so I highgraded my stuffed toys. The ones in the basket in the picture are the ones I'm keeping. The other's will be given to charity. "One small step for man, one large leap for a packrat!"
